One of British Columbia's most colourful eccentrics, Amor de Cosmos (born plain Bill Smith) not only founded its first newspaper,
but he served as provincial premier while sitting in the national parliament.
A champion of Confederation, he also promoted a motion for secession over the slow progress of the transcontinental railway.
